Kitchen update.

I've been trying to stay focused and only allow myself
to work on the kitchen project I've already started
before I get sidetracked by another.

Did I happen to mention that we've got 2 kitchens?  hehe

Don't worry, this kitchen was finished months ago.

The red shelves were made from a window cornice that I had Bill
cut out for me.  I didn't care for the way the cornice looked, but we were
able to repurpose the bottom scallops for open shelving in the play kitchen.

I found a set of vintage faucets and a bright red sink (Rubbermaid).

An ironstone pitcher to hold mini utensils is a must!

I wasn't able to find a Keurig, but this old tin coffee pot
makes a mean cup o' joe!

These stove knobs actually click on the different settings.

I had a serious love affair with Brach's Malted Milk Balls for years,
so when I spotted this fluorescent light at a local flea market,
it had to come home with me.  I don't care for fluorescent lighting
anywhere else, but this one provides plenty of light for junior bakers.

Before.

After.

I don't think I need to tell you how long it took me to finish this up.
Disclaimer:  I did not choose the baseboard trim color, but give me a break!
We've only been in the house 10 years.  hehe

Now for the progress in the big girl kitchen...
I chose to use the wider tongue-and-groove planking.  Since we aren't
finish carpenters by any means, I figured it's less expensive to make
mistakes with a single plank rather than a whole sheet of beadboard paneling.

It's moving along at a snail's pace because I've been cutting each piece
with a hand saw!  The cuts are straight, but the bullnose tile is uneven (it's made to look that way), so we'll cover up the edge with 1/4 inch quarter round molding when we finish.

Bill cut out the openings for the outlets where I marked them,
and believe it or not, we got it right!  Woo hoo!  Now we just have to remember to pull
the outlets through the openings and add the plastic spacers
before we glue and nail the boards down.  Tutorial at Thrifty Decor Chick.

A brief look back at where it all started....

This photo does not do the kitchen justice.  :o)
In 30 years, somebody will be viewing my planking and painted cabinets
the same way I looked at the Z-Brick, faux butcherblock countertops, wallpaper,
dated cabinetry, fluorescent lighting...............

I'm not even going to try to explain this.
That's the upper cabinet I removed on the right.
I'm keeping it for a while......just in case.

I especially like this view showing the dark doorway trim butted up
against painted trim in the kitchen and dining room.

A look ahead....

Um, yes please.

Thanks for stopping by!

  2. I am so proud of you!! This is the same planking that we used in the guest bedroom. Two big walls and lots of primer and paint.....and nearing completion. I did not know about the spacers for the sockets. That is in hubby's department...but will mention it to him.

I LOVE your inspiration picture. LOVE LOVE LOVE!

And your little kitchen is just the cutest ever. Of course, fresh is best! LOL!

  3. That kitchen is adorable. I love, love the little coffee pot. Much better than a Keurig. Great job on the board and batten. Can you do a tutorial on how to move out the outlets? That is what stopped me in my tracks with my beadboard backsplash.

  6. So sweet! You amaze me how you always find the perfect finishing touches for your projects. That Brach's Candy Shop light is the icing on the cupcake! (Had to say cupcake instead of cake because it's for a little kitchen. :)

  7. oh to be a "little" at your house, so many fun and imaginative playthings! Your big girl kitchen is really coming along, now about that black tole tray, they can cover a multitude huh? xoxo

  8. Your "play" kitchen...is that in a dollhouse? So cute. I am totally amazed and impressed that you are doing that wood work by yourself. Holy cow, girlfriend...I don't even know how to use a saw! I am definitely not a DIYer. I can't sew either. But hey, I'm a great cook and baker. Maybe that counts for something. ;-) Anyway, great job on the kitchen progress...it will look so wonderful when it's done!

  12. Hahaha, when you mentioned Z brick, I laughed out loud. We (at least a couple sisters and I) did that in our home kitchen back in the early 70s, so when I see people doing it again today, I have to laugh. That and milk paint - the old antiquing we used to do. It's not that I don't like the painted furniture today, but it sure is running its trendy course.
Love your play kitchen, and the real one too!

  25. I was so excited to see your kitchen! But the play kitchen is a close second best. Your kitchen has already gone a long way, I didn't remember those before pictures, so thanks for posting them again. The previous owners of my Cottage and yours might have been cousin... Same dark trim there and weird painted baseboard!

  40. Vicki, At first I thought I was looking at an adorable doll house kitchen, but when I read it was a kitchen for (some very lucky) junior bakers...I just flipped! It's downright precious, and I'm sure they'll spend many fun hours baking up all sorts of wonderful imaginary treats in there. You are just so full of fantastic ideas! Can't wait to see your big girl kitchen all finished up! xo Paulette

  41. Vicki I'm so impressed that you guys are doing the tongue and groove paneling yourselves. It's looking fabulous and I can't wait to see it done. And I know what you mean about 'snail's pace' that's about how fast things get done around here. Your play kitchen is amazing, I would have looooved that kitchen when I was a little. Heck, I love it right now.
