Let's Make a Deal!

I must confess.
I hate garage sales!
I hate everything about them.
I've held 2 in my life and I begged my mother and daughters
to "work" the sales.

I don't even like going to garage sales.
All that awkwardness.
In a small town, I'm likely to know the person holding the sale,
so even if it's all junk,  I feel like I have to buy something.
And then donate it to charity.

as I was driving home from Lowe's one Saturday afternoon,
I spotted a sale from the corner of my eye.
Two blocks later, I turned my car around to check it out.
I saw an old workbench looking thing that truly was a wonderful old piece.
It was made with old beadboard and the perfect size for a kitchen island.
But it was heavy.  And big.  And it wouldn't fit in my car.
And nothing was priced, but the salesman offered it to me for $10!

Call me crazy, but I had to pass it up.  I'm finally starting to clear stuff
out of our basement and garage, and I don't think that monster
would have fit through my doors.

I did find a couple of things I was interested in, though.

A 1950's Cosco step stool chair in need of a little love and...

a TV tray on wheels in perfect condition after a swipe with a Swiffer.

He wanted $2.00 each for these pieces!

No can do.  It was time to make a deal, Monty.

So, did I get a deal?

You betcha!
$1.00 each!!!

Julie, you'll be getting the TV tray you were looking for.  As for the chair...

A little elbow grease and some paint and I hope it resembles...

This step stool can also be used as a youth chair, and I'll be needing it soon.

We are expecting grandbaby number 3 right around Christmas!
Congratulations Julie and Jeremy!

Even though it was our turn to host Christmas (on Christmas Eve) this year.
Oh, well.  Christmas on Thanksgiving it is!

Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend!

  1. Consignment stores on my lunch hour is my thing! I do like estat sales though, no toys, baby strollers and baby clothes. I like your finds. Especially the tray!

  2. Wu-hoo! Look at your new banner! Love it's summery freshness but I'm concerned about Henriheada feeling jilted. Plus I probably spelled her name wrong. :0

What fabulous finds... and in your budget too! Loving that finished piece. We use my grandmother's yellow 50's step stool/chair whenever we have an extra for lunch. Macy's friends LOVE to sit in the special chair. I was just saying yesterday that I would love to re-do it. It has an upholstered seat though and lots of chrome. I may need a consultation.

Congratulations on the exciting news. I feel a new sock monkey in the works.

So... are you a changed woman? Will there be more garage sales in the future? Inquiring minds want to know...

  3. How dare you hate garage sales! Actually when I was younger and my Mom would go to garage sales in our small town, I would hunker down in the car so that no one I knew would see me.

That turquoise color will be perfect for the chair. I have one in red in my kitchen. Congratulations on the new baby!

  4. Sorry that was me logged into my other Google account.

  5. I cannot believe you got that chair for $1!!! Deal. Definitely a deal. Now is it for sale? ;)

  6. We aren't skipping over the Hibbing Christmas. It WILL happen next Christmas! Oh, and there were talks of a Minneapolis Christmas in January this year, too........Not sure if you were included in those talks yet....but yes. ;)

    Love the step stool!!!!

  7. OH yes, you got a deal! Can't wait to see the kitchen stool after the Ranger 911 treatment! Love your new header, too! Thanks for your so sweet comment about my sunporch...I do love that space!

  8. Forgot to say CONGRATULATIONS for the new little one on the way! XO

  9. I will admitt, I hate garage sales also, I feel awkward too! I don't go but I want too, the finds you found today prove to me I need to cast my foolishness aside and go for it.
Your step stool chair, looks amazing, oh how I love that color!!

  10. LOL...I'm no offended that you don't like "Garage Sales" !!! I've found amazing treasures at them and have been going to them since my "youth days"! I don't like all the work that goes into having one, but like the money afterwards and a cleaner garage!
    Nice buy and great prices!

  11. Phew! I thought I was the only one who hated garage sales. Flea markets whoo whoo - garage sales, not so much. Great finds! I do hope you'll share the step stool when you're finished.

  12. Vickie,
What a steal of a price.LOVE that stool.I just found one just like that I am selling it in my booth.I wish I could keep it.Hey if I don't sell it I am bringing it back here :-).That is one of the perks of having a shop.A place to store the things you don't have room for in your home but must have LOL.I am digging that tray too.Have a great weekend.

  13. Wow! What great finds. I bet you will be stopping more often at the sales after these bargains.

  14. That is unreal that you got that step stool for a buck! I've paid between $5 and $10 for them at auctions! I hope this made a garage sale believer out of you!!! I can't wait to see the stool when you finish it!

    Angie @ Knick of Time

  15. Vickie,
That was best deal ever! Can't wait to see it after you do your magic! The lowest I'v paid for a kitchen chair was $2.00 after an auction when they were cleaning up and putting things in the trash. I've got 2, a green and a red one. Cute tray, like the wheels. Congrats on the new little one! So exciting!

  16. P.S.
love the new look, sooooo summery!

  17. Oh you are a tough customer!! $1 each!!! I love both!!!
    Congrats on the grandchild!

  18. Oh my goodness, I would've snapped them up at $2 and thought I had robbed him :) Huge score! Do you like them any better now? And congrats early on your new addition...the grandbaby, not the stool and tray ;)

  19. You and I have much in common...our dread of garage sales, our 1950s Cosco step chair (mine is red)...and that we are both expecting grandbaby #3 (ours on January 6th).
What treasures you found in spite of it all!
    Have a great weekend!

  20. Wow, what a deal! I love those step stools... can't wait to see what you do with it!

  21. I'm almost too jealous to comment! That stool is FANTASTIC! Aqua ia the perfect color for it. The TV tray is pretty cool, too.
    Congratulations, Grandma!

  22. Oh Vickie,
I have never met anyone who didn't like garage sales...Hee, Hee, Hee! But aren't you glad you stopped? What fantabulous finds, and oh my, at a super duper deal. My mom bought a chair like yours at a garage sale once for $5 and we thought that was a deal 😊 Hope you'll be sharing pics of the chair when it's all done. Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

    Hugs and Kisses,

  23. Wow I must say I love love love that little step chair! What a bargain! Congrats on the new Grand coming soon!
    hugs, Linda

  24. You made a steal, not a deal! That stool is such a classic. I like it as is, but I know it will be a real beauty when you're done!

  25. I'm IN LOVE witht the stool you found! Gosh, you will enjoy using that. I like that you are able to paint it any color you want too. If you tire of the blue, you can repaint it again.

  26. Love that stool! My granny had one and ALL of us sat on it at the table. I found one several years ago too and now my grandkids use it! They are SO classic! I do need to repaint it though and I LOVE that aqua color!

  27. Yard saling is an acquired taste. I do more drive bys than stops, but that's where the deals are. You really scored. I love that TV tray and you will get so much use from that chair too.

  28. Wow! You did great! I love, love, love that little step up chair and it will look great when you do your magic. Great finds & unbelievable prices. I have a feeling you may start breaking for garage sales ":o)
