Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?

Welcome!

Let me turn the music down so we can visit.  I've got speakers wired into
our kitchen so I can play all my favorite Christmas tunes while I bake.
I think it's my favorite place to be at Christmastime.

You've seen the wall above numerous times, but this winter it feels warmer
in the room with the stenciled wallpaper.  Our big window faces north
which tends to give true whites a chilly bluish cast during the winter months.

Since our kitchen wears red and green all year long, decorating for Christmas
takes just a few minutes.  I keep the few things I put out in a small basket
on a little used upper cabinet shelf, so I don't even have to leave the room to decorate!

I moved this set of coasters way up high and out of reach of little fingers.
There are only 2 smiling faces left and I want to preserve them.

Do you hear that Maggie, our little climber?
Future firefighter perhaps?

Note to self:  Hide my ladder.

It's nice to be able to add small pops of color on my open shelving.
The ( Holt Howard?) salt & pepper shakers I've had forever
are a favorite of mine and that's why they're on the high altitude shelf.

I finished painting the remaining kitchen walls a slightly warmer white
as you can see under the bakery sign.  Leftover kitchen "greens" and a pine cone wreath
decorate the space above the coat rack in the back entryway.

I've now got enough Santa nut cups to fill my sterilizer cabinet.

The reclining elf-on-the-sewing-machine-drawer-shelf is joined by
vintage mushroom candle holders that I found on clearance after Christmas last year.

This is the room where we coffee drinkers like to hang out,
the kiddos eat breakfast and lunch, and the cooking happens,
so a few holiday accents bring a festive feel without taking up valuable space.

FYI, the chalk painted table and chairs finished with MMS clear furniture wax
are holding up nicely, and clean up easily with a mild vinegar and warm water solution.
Kid tested, grandma approved.

One tiny change here is the red & white crocheted romper pot holder
on the wall above the green scale.

Once again, the boss man keeps an eye on what's happening below.

View from the dining room before the baking starts.

Now it's time to crank up my Christmas tunes and bake some cookies!

This year's Christmas selfie (gift bought for one's self) is the set of 3 bowls
for only $5.99 at Walgreens, of all places!  I could not resist.

For years, I've marveled over the pretty gingerbread houses
and beautifully decorated cookies displayed in Scandinavian kitchens,
so today I made time to bake and decorate my own.

OMG.

They are way more labor intensive than one would think,
so of the 5 dozen cookies my recipe made, this is as many as my
stiff slightly arthritic hands could decorate at one time!

Unfortunately they will not be hanging in the windows and strung across shelves.
They will be locked up tight in covered containers.

Have you read KariAnne's story about her disappearing gingerbread men?
(If not, click on her name for the lowdown.  Let me tell you, it's all
fun & games when you're reading about somebody else's house.)

Much to my horror and dismay, we discovered a pair uninvited guests
stirring in our house this holiday season.  Eeek!!!!
Let's add a few more !!!!!!! to let you know how I really feel about them!!!!!

They've now been "escorted off the property", so to speak, and I don't think I'll be
inviting them back in any time soon for biscuits and tea.

To all creatures, great and small, Merry Christmas!
Vickie

Do you remember the rhyme from your childhood that goes like this....

Group:  Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?
Mousie stole the cookie from the cookie jar!
Mousie:  Who me?
 Group:  Yes you!
 MousieCouldn't be.
GroupThen who?
Mousie:  (insert name here) stole the cookie from the cookie jar!
Repeat until everybody in the bus has a turn.

  1. Lol I do indeed remember that song :).

Living in the country, we have our fair share of mice. I've left peppermint extract on cotton balls throughout the house and that seems to have helped.

Your kitchen is just darling Vicki.

  2. Well the cookies look amazing! You did a great job. And that's a good way to decorate: red and green all year and you've got it made. I'll make a note of that!

  5. I think my heart actually stopped beating for a moment when I saw your cookies. Those are amazing! Cute bowls from Walgreens. I wouldn't have passed them up either. Your kitchen is so cute and festive. Enjoy all the baking and merriment! xo

  6. Does Mrs. Claus know you're sterilizing her husband? She may have a thing or two to say about that! A few years ago I bought a green platter from Walgreens while I was shopping for vitamins. Who knew that had such cool stuff!.

  7. First of all, lol, yes, I remember the "Who Stole the Cookie...." I was actually kinda dancing and singing it when I read the title. You know, kinda jazz-like - at least that's how we sang it.
OMG I read Karianne's post - that's enough for me to never want to make those things as decor! I would've guessed it was her husband....that's what mine would've been doing. He keeps begging me to make him some....so I baked him a spice cake this evening. And speaking of the g'bread men (which, btw, look like art)..Marian at MMS made some for decor. Somebody ought to tell her!
I love your house, I wanna live there, in that kitchen (do you know that's one room in my home I DON'T decorate?!). Those tiny little wooden characters on the coasters - too cute! and that cute little red frock of a crochet potholder - love that on the wall!
Oh dear, yes, hide that ladder! She reminds me of me!

  10. What a cute rhyme and I don't think I ever heard it before! Your kitchen is charming and while I have red in mine year round I love the green also. I have just added a brother and sister 'mouse' to my kitchen decor in honor of my Grands. The only kind of mice I like in my house by the way! Hugs!

  12. I would want to spend all my time in your kitchen. It has so many little places with eye candy stashed here and there. I love all the aqua with the red and pops of wood. Your table is beautiful and I love the wall paper. I haven't even started baking, but will try this week. I remember "Who stole the cookie." Those were the days. Enjoy!

  14. I've always loved your kitchen and I think even moreso with your Christmas decor! We've had mice in our house a couple of times and while I think they're cute, they're only cute outdoors where they belong! I can tell those cookies were very labor intensive. I could never decorate those cookies as beautifully as you did - you did a wonderful job!

  15. I always find your kitchen beautiful, but it looks even better at Christmas as the red and green touches just blend in your usual decor!

  16. I don't remember who stole the cookie? but i liked it! Your kitchen is so pretty and for some reason don't remember seeing it before or maybe its my terrible memory! I'm so not a baker but my Mom was a great one and would hide the cookies upstairs in the attic. I enjoyed your post and wishing you and your family a merry Christmas!

  18. It's all just delightful Vickie! I crank the Christmas music up when I'm in the kitchen as well. I love the color of green on your cabinet and table. Did you paint them? Do you know the color name? Wishing you a Happy New Year!
    hugs,
    Jann

  19. Your kitchen is so charming with the jadite green color mixed with the vibrant red and white. I love the cookies you made too. They look very scandinavian. I have had to deal with mice in the house before too. I remember seeing something scitter across the floor in the dark one night when I came into the kitchen when the lights were off. It scared me to death! My husband had to set traps.
